Myrrh-bearing wives are women who received Christ in their homes during his travels. They went to the place of the crucifixion of Jesus. Women witnessed the Savior’s sufferings. They hurried to the Holy Sepulcher from early morning on Sunday to anoint his body with peace. And they were the first to know that the Savior was resurrected.
The authors of the Gospels say the names of these women: Mary Magdalene, Salome the mother of John and James Zebedee, Mary the mother of James, John the wife of Huza. The Scripture speaks of both Mary and Martha, Susanna. These women entered liturgical texts under the common name of Myrrh-bearing women.
According to the scripture, Mary Magdalene came first to the Holy Sepulcher. When she saw that Jesus was not in him, she cried, believing that the body was stolen.
After the departure of the apostles, Magdalen remained at the tomb. At that time, she was the appearance of Christ, whom she had taken first as a gardener. He asked to speak about his resurrection. When Mary went to the apostles, she met the second Mary and told her the good news. And Christ appeared again, commanding to communicate the good news. Upon hearing about the resurrection, the disciples did not believe.
According to another version, Christ was the first to appear not to Magdalen, but to his mother Mary. In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus first saw the Myrrh-Bearers.
In the guise of their church sees not only those who helped Christ, but also other peasant women. Their faces are displayed on icons.
In Orthodoxy, the third week of Easter is called the Myrrh-Women Week. Her relatives, children, friends should congratulate their loved ones - mothers, sisters, spouse.
