WHEC 720 Sherman is one of the 12 large Hamilton-type US Coast Guard patrol ships, commissioned from 1967 to 1972, and before joining the US Coast Guard from 2008, new Legend-type patrol ships were the largest patrol ships in it. .Sherman was commissioned in September 1968 and removed from the US Coast Guard in Honolulu on March 29, 2018 (thus the age of the ship is 50 years).
Since 2011, Hamilton-type ships have been withdrawn from the US Coast Guard and sold to foreign fleets. To date, nine Hamilton-type ships have been written off, three of which were transferred to the Philippine Navy (WHEC 715 Hamilton, WHEC 716 Dallas and WHEC 719 Boutwell), two to the Nigerian Navy (WHEC 718 Chase and WHEC 721 Gallatin), two to the Bangladeshi Navy (WHEC 723 Rush and WHEC 725 Jarvis), one (WHEC 722 Morgenthau) - the Coast Guard of Vietnam, and now one (WHEC 720 Sherman) - the Sri Lankan Navy. The transfer of the ships themselves is free of charge, but the recipient country must pay for the repairs and necessary improvements of the ships, as well as the training of their crews in the USA (in particular, the Philippines, for which Boutwell received in 2016 paid a total of $ 16 million).
Earlier in early 2018, it was reported that Sherman also planned to transfer to Vietnam, but in the end the ship received Sri Lanka.
As the media reported to Sri Lanka, in early August 2018, the Sri Lankan government made a final decision not to order the Cheetah 5.1 project patrol ship in Russia, which the parties had been negotiating for a long time.In fact, the American patrol ship was acquired by Sri Lanka in exchange for the order of the patrol ship in Russia.
