Thuja western - evergreen garden bush
Nowadays, it is very fashionable to decorate homestead and dacha plots with hedges of evergreen shrubs. They look great all year round and do not require special care. One of the most popular and sought-after plants is the thuja western. This shrub can be an ornament to any manor, and besides, it is very useful for purifying the air, and therefore for human health.
Thuja western - an evergreen slow-growing coniferous tree with a smooth even bark. It can reach a height of 20 meters. A distinctive feature of this shrub is scaly needles. Because of the decorative compact pyramidal crown, the thuja resembles a cypress. Young shoots are rather flat, their needles are bright green, the trunk is smooth, the bark begins to flake off only at a later age. Thuja western - monoecious plant. Its needles can be of various shades: dark green, golden and blue. The fruit of the plant - cones. They have an ovate oblong shape, consist of stiff brownish scales. This scale hides the seeds of the plant, they are flattened with thin narrow wings. In the fall, during the period of pollination, the seeds easily spontaneously pour out of the cones. Wood deserves special attention. It is sound, durable, but at the same time soft, rich reddish color.
Not many people know how useful it is to clean the air of the thuja western. Although its varieties differ in the color of the needles and the shape of the crown, they all have remarkable bactericidal properties. Being in the room, this plant fills the air with healing aero ions. In addition, the thuja produces a huge amount of phytoncides. These substances have a detrimental effect on various bacteria and fungal spores. There are miniature dwarf varieties of thuja that can be grown indoors. One such plant in the apartment will be enough to clear all the air. And still on small needles of a thuja a static charge accumulates, and then the tree acts as a kind of vacuum cleaner: the needles attract the smallest mote and dust particles. That is why this shrub must be periodically sprayed abundantly, arranging a real water shower, regardless of whether it is a garden plant or a room.
The thuja western differs in small exactingness to fertility of the earth. It grows well in neutral and slightly acidic soils. Loves humidity, but is able to withstand a short dry period. In a strong shade and in excessively dry areas, the needles of the plant turn yellow and crown is very thin. It is best to plant it in the penumbra, because in the sun it often dries out and gets burned. The root system is superficial, it is sufficient to loosen to a depth of 10 cm. In the first wintering season, young seedlings must be securely covered with kraft paper or lapnik. Adult plants do not need it. Perhaps there is no plant more sensitive to the scorching sunlight than the western thuja. Planting, care should take into account this feature of it.
