What is the Olympics?
The Olympic Games are the competitions of the strongest athletes from different countries among themselves. They set up both athletes and fans for fair wrestling, which is opposed to wars and conflicts. Olympiad is a celebration of strength and courage, when the triumph of one person merges with the achievements of all mankind.
Antique Olympic Games
The beginning of the Olympic Games is 776 BC, and Ancient Greece is the parent country of the Olympics. The venue of these competitions in ancient times was the Altis Grove in Olympia, which is distinguished by its soft, pacifying kind of nature. This was consistent with the spirit of the competition, during which all wars ceased, in addition, Olympia was a sacred place in Greece.
The competition was attended only by men who were free citizens and did not commit dishonorable deeds. Women were even forbidden to attend the competitions as spectators, and those who violated this rule were thrown off the cliff. But the story tells that after all there was a woman named Kallipateira, who came to watch the competition and did not receive a punishment for it. She trained her son and came to the stadium in men's clothes, but in a fit of delight from the victory of her son, she betrayed herself. The judges did not punish her, but made changes to the competition rules. From now on, all the coaches in ancient Greece were supposed to be naked at the stadium. Young ancient athletes were also naked at such an Olympics, which emphasized the cult of body beauty that existed then in Greece.
In 394, the Olympics were banned, since Christianity that became the official religion considered these games to be a manifestation of paganism. But after 1,500 years in 1894, at a congress at the Sorbonne, a French public figure and educator, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, proposed to revive the Olympic Games. As a progressive figure of his time, Pierre de Coubertin understood the importance of proper organization of young people’s life, strengthening the health of the younger generation, their orientation towards peace, friendship and a healthy competitive spirit. Congress supported this proposal and decided to hold the first Olympiad in 1896 in Greece, and more specifically in Athens. All organizational work was entrusted to the elected International Olympic Committee, and the rules were spelled out in the Olympic Charter. These rules, in particular, state that discrimination against any athlete or country for various reasons is unacceptable.
The second Olympic Games were held in Paris in 1900. For the first time women took part in these competitions. The Russian Empire team also played in these games for the first time.
Symbols of the Olympiad: emblem, flag and oath
Five rings, which mean the five parts of the world united by the Olympic Games, is the emblem of the games. And on the white Olympic flag these same rings are fluttering - red, black and blue at the top, and green and yellow - at the bottom. To utter an oath is entrusted to one of the outstanding athletes of the country in which the Olympics are held. There is also an oath of judges in which they promise to treat all contestants with an open mind.
Each Olympiad involves a solemn opening ceremony and closing of these games with the flag raising and the solemn speech of the chairman of the International Olympic Committee. At the same time, the host country of the Olympiad is preparing a theatrical performance accompanying these events. Usually, the presentation demonstrates the particularities of a country, its history and achievements.
2018 Winter Olympics in Pkhenchkhane
Like all previous Olympics, this Olympiad was a magnificent spectacle that filled the lives of all the inhabitants of the earth with a festive atmosphere, carrying the spirit of peace and friendship. Even the delegation of North Korea took part in these competitions, despite the existing military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
The distressing moment of this Olympiad was the prejudiced attitude of the judges towards the participants of the Russian team, which they forced to play without their flag. In addition, many of the best athletes of this team were not admitted to the Games. They were accused of doping, but did not provide evidence. This fact is not consistent with the paragraph of the Olympic Charter, which refers to the inadmissibility of discrimination against some participants in the competition.
Despite this, the Russian team performed well. She won 17 medals, 2 of which are gold.
World Olympics are often set at
rdy. The 2018 Olympics are no exception. Especially interesting is the fact of establishing a world record in single figure skating among women. Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva scored 81.61 points in the short program of the personal tournament, and this was a world record. And after 20 minutes, her teammate, 15-year-old figure skater Alina Zagitova, scored 82.92 points in the same program, and this was a new world record.
